Megan Reilly has a beautiful voice, but she does not sing like an angel. Angels are boring. They have uncomplicated lives, their earthly troubles light washed and rinsed clean of what’s real. The heavenly beauty in Megan’s voice is far richer, filtered through layers of serious experience —the pain of her loss, the force of her love, and the talent that has stayed with her since she left Memphis for New York as a teenager. Megan took the past ten years off of music to grow up - have another child, become an in-demand master gardener and settle into herself and a rich family life. This new release is simply titled Megan Reilly, as if it were here all along, waiting for her to come back to her music as a fully realized songbird and songwriter. The four-song EP is played masterfully by the same all-star band she assembled at 23. It consists of Steve Goulding (Mekons/Graham Parker & The Rumour/session drummer on Elvis Costello’s Watching The Detectives and Wreckless Eric’s Whole Wide World as well co writer and drummer on Nick Lowe’s “I Love The Sound of Breaking Glass”), Tony Maimone (original bassist of Pere Ubu/Bob Mould/Frank Black and Grammy nominated recording engineer) and James Mastro (The Bongos/Ian Hunter/Patti Smith) on lead guitar.
They’ve recaptured their magic to make a special collection of songs. In addition to three new songs, the EP also boats an extra treat, in the form of a thoughtful, 20th anniversary.re-record of “With You”, originally released on 2003’s Arc of Tessa, It’s been a minute since Megan released The Well, her third album with Carrot Top Records, when NPR listed her as “Next Artist on The Rise”. But Megan’s ascent was merely delayed. Her latest compositions are fresh and ferocious, tackling themes like the heartbreaking loss of her mother and the tremendous fears that come with being one herself.
Megan Reilly was recorded in February of 2023 in Brooklyn, NY at Studio G by Mia Wagner and Tony Maimone. It was mixed by Tony Maimone at Studio G, and mastered by Scott Anthony at Storybook Sound in Maplewood NJ .The EP released via the Magic Door Record Label, the Montclair, NJ based imprint run by Renee LoBue and Ray Ketchem of Elk City, and Kevin March of Guided by Voices. Me and my friend used to go on drives all the time, and a lot of the time i asked what he was playing, and a majority of the songs were from Yo La Tengo. And since i went and listened to And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out i was fan. Never thought i’d buy one of their records for myself. violetstain
